Press release:

After over a 15 year hiatus, the Imajinary Friends are back with a new collection of sizzling electric dreams from space that pulsate with a strange, sexy, far out groove (i.e. L’Outsider, with guest vocals and lyrics by Deborrah Morgan aka Moogy.) On their eponymously self-titled 3rd LP, the Imajinary Friends tweak the frequencies and really fry all the instrumentation that is both dizzying and danceable (i.e. The Dark Sparkle or Space Trash.) The Imajinary Friends continue to experiment with sounds and rhythm on tracks like 101 Kazoos and Frangipani. This record brings the rhythms of the 70’s Krautrock scene with the dark guitars of UK Post-Punk paired with buried vocals and slurred sounds of the 90’s shoegaze movement.

The Imajinary Friends are a somewhat mysterious collective. Ever changing and evolving. The core 3 are Tim Digulla (one half of Lounge/Exotica/Electronica duo Tipsy,) Ricky Maymi (current guiterrorist & founding member of The Brian Jonestown Massacre; he also played with Mellow Drunk, Spectrum, The Wild Swans and Steve Kilbey, among many others) and Travis Threlkel (also a founding member of BJM, now, founder & creative director at Obscura Digital) For these recordings, the Imajinary Friends enlisted the following to sing vocals on several tracks: The aforementioned, Australian/French-Belgian Singer-songwriter Moogy (L'Outsider); Stephen Lawrie of The Telescopes (Hate This Party); and Marleen Nilsson of Death And Vanilla (Baby’s Bathwater)

What’s being said about The Imajinary Friends...

"San Francisco's The Imajinary Friends, mercurial pranksters of soundscape and pop, continue to turn in the unexpected with their unique brand of original and uncompromising music." -- Pete Kember aka Sonic Boom

THE IMAJINARY FRIENDS
“The Imajinary Friends”

4 Stars

"Formed by core trio Tim Digulla (Tipsy), Ricky Maymi (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) and Travis Threlkel (fellow BJM founding member), Imajinary Friends’ third LP and their first for 15 years is a fabulous acid fried amalgamation of danceable rhythms, frazzled guitar sounds and avant-pop which comes on at times like the offspring of Can and My Bloody Valentine. Opener “L’Outsider” with French language vocals by guest singer Moogy Morgan is a deliciously groovy and languid affair and hypnotically infectious. “Alone” is a brilliantly dark groove with fractured post-punk guitars forming a wall of sound which remains accessible whilst staying far out. Other highlights include the brilliantly warped one minute and fifty-three seconds of contemporary psych that is “Space Trash” and closer “Baby’s Bathwater” offers up a subtle Krautrock soundscape that shimmers and builds its understated wall of noise over the course of it’s 12 minutes.”

Paul Osborne, Shindig! Magazine

"I love it, somewhere between CAN and Hawkwind travelling in Asia in an old German car, how could you go wrong?" ~ Marty Willson-Piper

"The Imajinary Friends of San Francisco, California dive deep into Krautrock grooves and post-punk dreams with sexy counterculture lysergic experimentation. The music has way far-out quantum consciousness by the microgram dosing your ears with kaleidoscopic liquid sounds. This self-titled album is distributed by 300 Mics a label in San Fransisco with a limited edition clear vinyl with a blotter paper insert. The exotic blending of electronica and psychedelic rock is both danceable and exploratory perfect for your trip parties.
The Imajinary Friends are purposely obscure with very little media about them. Described as a collective with three core members: Tim Digulla of Tipsy; Ricky Maymi guitarist and founding member of Brain Jonestown Massacre; Travis Threlkel founding member of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and director at Obscura Digital where the album was mastered and overdubbed. Their debut “Lunchtime In Infinity” came out in 1994 they would wait 24 years before this self-titled release in 2017. During that time each musician was working with various projects and touring world-wide.
“L’Outsider” is the single with a guest appearance from Moogy with brilliant lead vocals sung in French. The song begins much like Can from Tago Mago era with club ready beats and dark kraut flavor. The vocals enter like an etherial psytrance spell sweeping the sound into visionary lights." - THEPSYCHROCK.COM thepsychrock.com/2018/07/10/imajinary-friends/
